Oracle Internet Directory (OID) shows its mettle by demonstrating the capability to support 400,000 Ops/sec on a 500 million user database. In an accompanying white paper Oracle shows how they got OID 11g on an Oracle Exadata Database Machine containing 500 million entries -- roughly the size of Facebook's 2010 user population -- to perform 400K operations per second using only an Exadata half-rack and 10 gb Ethernet, which means there was plenty of performance left. In its release, Oracle maintains that no other vendor offers two proven options: either scaling horizontally by data partitioning using DSEE leveraging existing commodity hardware, or avoiding partitioning by utilizing the power of Oracle RDBMS with OID with or without the unique capabilities of Oracle Exadata.

Oracle is unique, proclaims Steve Miranda, Senior VP for application development, in an eWeek interview with Nicholas Kolakowski. Miranda's opinion stems from Oracle's multiple roles as a cloud-infrastructure provider, a cloud-application vendor, and a cloud host. No one else does all three, he contends. Another Oracle advantage, Miranda said, is the ability to provide integrated and complete systems tailored to very specific company needs. 'We know [customers] have a choice, it's a highly competitive market and we have to be best in class,' Miranda stressed. Kolakowski adds that Oracle has also moved to introduce cloud-based APIs for interoperability, ensuring that workloads can be moved between clouds.
